Artist Information

Born and raised in San Francisco, California, 20-year-old underscores has amassed an underground following around the artist’s structureless alt-pop tracks. With stylistic influences such as Cornelius, Skrillex, Tennyson, and 100 gecs, underscores’ forward-thinking pop music mixes and matches genres from ‘00s alternative rock to the bubbly future bass of the past decade.
underscores originally built a following on SoundCloud posting intricately crafted instrumental music with a heavy electronic focus. Upon turning 17, underscores began to channel feelings of teenage anxiety and confusion through lyrics, culminating in the formative EP “skin purifying treatment.” The artist’s vulnerable songwriting and boundary-pushing production resonated with a host of like-minded teenagers who grew up on the Internet. Since the project’s release in mid-2018, underscores released “we never got strawberry cake,” a 3-song alt-pop journey detailing the pitfalls of a falling out, and “character development!,” a short EP released with the esteemed electronic label bitbird.
In 2021, underscores will continue to sonically and lyrically challenge the boundaries of pop music with a debut full-length album titled fishmonger, which combines the bubbly synthetic production of the artist’s past work with the nostalgia of ‘00s-era music and media.
