Artist Information
Jenevieve is an analog girl at heart—blending old school charm with contemporary flair. The 27-year-old recording artist emerged as a genre-blurring force in 2020 with the release of her breakout single “Baby Powder” (175M+ in global consumption), a track that captivated listeners during the pandemic and set the stage for her rise. Her music defies easy labels; it's not quite neo-soul, not quite R&B, but always, undeniably, Jenevieve. That distinct in-between space, created with executive producer and songwriter Elijah Gabor, is where she’s always thrived.
Raised in the vibrant South Florida neighborhoods of Pembroke Pines, Jenevieve was immersed in a rich swirl of cultural influences. Her Cuban mom, a former dancer for Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, introduced her to the eccentric cool of Art of Noise, Boy George, and Erykah Badu while also bringing soul into the mix: The Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, and Anita Baker. Jenevieve wrote her first song at five, though at the time, she envisioned a future in dance, not singing.
Her maternal grandmother, a professional ballerina, ran Ballet Vivian Tobio, a studio tucked in Coral Way. It was there that she studied everything from flamenco and samba to ballet and hip-hop, and eventually began teaching her own classes. The rhythm she developed through movement, she says, undoubtedly shaped her musical flow, influencing her taste in music and style of performance.
Everything changed when her mom moved them to Los Angeles before her teens. “It was tough,” she remembers. “I got picked on a lot—for being so tall, having big hair. It was hard to make friends.” But LA also cracked something open. Her mom joined a church known for its strong music ministry, and members encouraged the shy preteen to join the youth choir. Her first solo—a spiritual reworking of Tupac's "California Love"—caught the attention of the musical director, who began mentoring her and urging her to explore her gift.
Music became her compass. Jenevieve joined the glee club in high school and started recording a series of demos with local producers. Her mom supported every step, paying for vocal lessons and studio time. Those years were a whirlwind of experimentation and self-discovery: “Flowing, floating, writing songs...” She knew music was her calling, but the path forward was unclear. In a city full of dreamers, she wasn’t sure how she’d break through.
It was a family friend who introduced Jenevieve to producer and songwriter Elijah Gabor who had just returned from Paris, frustrated and ready to walk away from the music industry. They clicked instantly and formed a creative partnership that crystallized Jenevieve’s dreamy sound—music that felt like home. In early 2020, the duo tested the market with the single “Medallion” and followed up with “Baby Powder,” which gained massive traction and led to a deal with Interscope Records.
Jenevieve’s debut project Division, released in the fall of 2021, cemented her as one of the most exciting new voices of her generation. Pitchfork described her sound as “the perfect blend of new-age soul and timeless R&B,” while Billboard called her “a force to be reckoned with—both musically and visually.” Tracks like “Eternal,” “No Sympathy,” and “Résumé” showcased Jenevieve and Elijah’s knack for pairing silky melodies with raw, reflective storytelling.
Jenevieve carried that momentum into Rendezvous, a six-track EP released the next year. Songs like “Love Quotes,” “2NLuv,” and “CaNdY LiEs” pushed her sonic palette even further—flirtier, spacier, more ethereal—while staying grounded in that signature Jenevieve vibe. The project earned her a coveted opening spot on Giveon’s North American “Give or Take” tour and solidified her status as a talent with real staying power. “It was my first time on the road,” she says. “I learned about stage presence, self-care, and got so much love from fans.”
After touring, rather than rush into the next release, Jenevieve opted to re-center herself—spending time with family, navigating the growing pains of early adulthood, and working on new songs with Elijah— quietly shaping the next chapter. That stretch of focused creativity led to CRYSALIS, an album that beautifully captures her evolution both musically and personally.
As Jenevieve continues to evolve, she remains rooted in authenticity—blossoming into a performer who’s confident, ambitious, and fiercely independent. Her journey is a testament to staying true to oneself while embracing growth, and she’s dedicated to carving her own path and empowering others to do the same. Her approach isn’t just about music; it’s about proving that true artistry is at its best when you do what you believe in.
