Swamp Yankee and one-man band The Suitcase Junket (Matt Lorenz) appears tonight with a cast of Special Guests that includes string celestials Ellie Buckland, Isa Burke, and Mali Obomsawin a.k.a. Lula Wiles; sister Kate Lorenz of Rusty Belle and Kate Lorenz & The Constellations; and Tim Gearan ("Americana Star ... Boston's Best-Kept Secret" -- The Patriot Ledger). With more guests TBA, this is a night of unpredictable wonders.
From the salvaged sounds of American juke joints, back porches, honky tonks and rock clubs, The Suitcase Junket conjures an entirely new sound in his essential rock collection Pile Driver.
"After seeing and hearing the unique musical output of Matt Lorenz, “The Suitcase Junket”, we were enthralled ... " -- Make magazine, which premiered The Suitcase Junket's official video "Mountain of Mind"
The Suitcase Junket's "songs range from the arty grunge of “The Next Act” and punk-blues stomp of “Evangeline” to the fingerpicked “Busted Gut” and the uplifting “Mountain of Mind,” its support for people in transition sealed by a catchy wordless chorus. They appear on Pile Driver, his fourth album and April debut on Signature Sounds, the same label that launched Lake Street Dive ... " -- Improper Bostonian
"Lorenz, a master of multitasking, plays guitar while drumming with his feet and boasts the astonishing ability to sing two notes at once using a technique similar to the one made famous by Tuvan throat singers. When it comes right down to it, though, Lorenz relies as much on methods tried-and-true: bluesy guitar riffs, tenacious melodies and a singing voice both weathered and nimble. You don’t need to witness his physics-defying performance to be captivated; the music stands on its own." -- WBUR, Boston
Though the band is young, all the members of Lula Wiles have spent their lives grounded in songs. Born in Maine to musical families, they began playing music together as kids at Maine Fiddle Camp, and eventually each made their way to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. Isa and Ellie began performing as a duo in 2013, and Lula Wiles was born when Mali joined the band a year later. When Lula Wiles performs, the band’s many years of friendship are clear from their effervescent vocal blend and electrifying musical chemistry. Now based in Boston's thriving and close-knit roots music community, Lula Wiles have performed at premier festivals and clubs throughout the East Coast, including Club Passim, the Sinclair, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Fresh Grass Festival, and Green River Music Festival. They were also selected as Official Showcase Artists for the 2016 Folk Alliance International conference. Roots authority No Depression predicts Lula Wiles “will be a huge force on the Americana scene for years to come.” All proficient vocalists, multi-instrumentalists, and songwriters, the three women of Lula Wiles are each uniquely powerful in their own right; but combined, they are a force to be reckoned with.
Singing with as many people as possible Kate has performed in a gypsy jazz group, afrobeat band, sleazy pop cover group, with a bluegrass trio, a female motown group, and formed the nationally touring band Rusty Belle with her brother Matt Lorenz (The Suitcase Junket) in 2006.
Kate has recorded back up vocals for fellow folk artists: Chris Smither, Jeffrey Foucault, Caitlin Canty, Hayward Williams, The Suitcase Junket and Zak Trojano.
Kate currently lives in Western MA and plays and sings with her band Kate Lorenz & The Constellations (Ben Falkoff, Max Adam and Don McAulay) and with the Southern VT honky tonk band The Rear Defrosters. Her all-vinyl radio show, The Vinyl Countdown, is on Valley Free Radio on Wednesday evenings.
Kate Lorenz's first solo album is due out in January 2018.
Gearan is regularly sought after by countless musicians for his uninhibited, soulful guitar playing, creative soaring abilities. and song writing collaborations.
After 10 years of touring nationally and abroad as a sideman guitarist for Toni Lynn Washington, Gearan lived in Somerville, Massachusetts for 18 years, performing his own music with a remarkable band of Boston MVPs almost exclusively, occasionally stripping down his songs at several listening rooms to a full house.
To say Gearan’s fans are loyal and adoring is an understatement; his cast of ever expanding and long-time followers show their devotion by showing up to his weekly residencies week after week. "Tim’s songs are near enough to the source of things that any player wants to get near them, it's like a watering hole, just a natural phenomenon; it's where the critters gather." (songwriter/collaborator, Peter Mulvey)”
And gather they do. Music lovers, friends and Boston’s most prestigious musicians have packed Gearan’s weekly residency at Atwood’s Tavern, a musician-favorite venue in Cambridge, Friday after Friday for years and counting.
Gearan continues to collaborate with an amazement of artists in Boston and beyond.
His most recent album "Mostly Love" was released this spring. It is a collection of 11 songs that are about mostly love in all its variations. You can find "Mostly Love" and Geran's entire discography at CDBaby.com.
